Don’t Ignore Overlap in Locations for Bladder Cancer

Question: Our physician documented a malignant cancer of the lateral and posterior wall of the urinary bladder. Can we submit codes C67.2 and C67.4?

Answer: The codes C67.2 (Malignant neoplasm of lateral wall of bladder) and C67.4 (Malignant neoplasm of posterior wall of bladder) apply to neoplasms in the lateral and posterior walls of the urinary bladder, respectively. Before you submit these two diagnosis codes, make sure the lesions were not in continuity over the two sites. If you read that there was an overlap in lesion on the lateral and posterior walls, you submit code C67.8 (Malignant neoplasm of overlapping sites of bladder).
