Question: If the physician obtains a biopsy from the anterior pillar and also removes the upper half of the nostril, would cpt code 42842 (Radical resection of tonsil, tonsillar pillars and/or retromolar trigone; without closure) be used to bill this procedure?

Answer:Yes, CPTcode 42842 would be the appropriate procedure code used to bill.  During this procedure, the physician removes the tonsils, tonsillar pillars and/or the retromolar trigone (small area behind the wisdom teeth), often as a way to remove cancerous growth.  If necessary, the physician removes portions of the maxilla or mandible that are affected.  The resulting wound is so loarge that it is left open to be grafted during a later procedure.
